So am i the only one that thinks that amon and tarrlok could possibly still be alive? Amon has been through alot and wouldn't stand for blowing up on a boat in the middle of nowhere, and tarrlock is pretty strong person himself? Maybe they might be back in the second season. (well at least i hope)

Amon was caught by surprise, and even if he had noticed at the last instant, what was he going to do, waterbend a shield for himself?

Who knows. He knew things wouldn't be the same with and his brother. he probably knew that tarrlok would do something drastic and prepared for it if tarrlok wouldn't see things his way.

Truth be told, I don't think Amon cared too much about dying. His plan for revenge against the Avatar and abusive bending as a whole failed, and he didn't have much left to live for.

Agreed. Just being with his brother, the one person he could truly be himself and not have a care in world, meant everything to him. And to die with him? Brothers till the end.

...and that is why this scene was amazing. In fact, it made me completely accepting of the Tarrlok/Amon relationship, because the emotional payoff is so perfect.
